“AND HOW’D JACK and Jill take that?” Hardy asked.

Glitsky had swung by Hardy’s house on his way home and now the two men were taking advantage of the rare warm night with lawn chairs on Hardy’s back porch, just outside his kitchen door—Diz with his gin and Abe with his usual iced tea. The sky above was still bright blue, and in front of them, dozens of windows in the west-facing buildings sparkled in a glorious light show, reflecting the sun as it started to go down behind them.

Abe nodded. “They probably weren’t exactly thrilled to hear that I was going to be sniffing around what really is their territory. But what are they going to do? I’d just brought them the best leads they’d seen so far. They spit in that bowl at their own peril.”

Hardy sat back in his chair. “And you really think this was about jealousy?”

“It’s as good a bet as any, and better than most. And if the warrants don’t turn up somebody coming to Doug’s address on Tuesday night, that means somebody he knew came by to pick him up in their own car.”

Hardy shrugged. “It might mean that.”

Glitsky gave him a querulous look. “Don’t be so negative. Here I drop by to share with you my brilliant detective work, all based on a bona fide clue on a magazine cover, of all things. I thought you’d be a little more enthusiastic, if not to say celebratory.”

Hardy chuckled. “I’d break out the champagne, except I know you don’t drink. Meanwhile, since it’s not in your nature to wait for anything, what’s your next move? I thought you’d eliminated any connection to Paul.”

“Not definitely. Not any connection. Just the most obvious one.”

“Which is?”

“James Riley—Paul’s dad—as Doug’s killer.”

“And how did you get all the way to definite on that one?”

Glitsky settled back, crossing his legs. “Look at what James would have to pull off Tuesday night to get away with killing Doug. He wouldn’t have risked a phone call, setting up an appointment. Doug wasn’t a fool and that could only have meant one thing. That leaves James simply coming by Doug’s apartment uninvited in the middle of the night. He rings the doorbell, same thing. Doug sees who it is and he doesn’t open the door.”

“Getting a little farfetched here.”

“Okay, but just for fun, let’s even go one step further: say James somehow gets inside the front door downstairs, then, even more unbelievably, gets Doug to open his apartment door, where James gets him at gunpoint and says, ‘Come with me. We’ve got to talk.’ ”

Hardy came forward in his chair and shook his head. “That couldn’t have happened.”

Glitsky agreed. “Correct. Not in a million years. And that even leaves out how they could have driven together—James at the wheel of his car all the while he’s holding his gun on Doug—until they get out to the park, fifteen minutes away. And then they take a walk like two old buddies? Which they are not.
